Surface to paint on
Many people forget this simple thing. I highly recommend against painting directly on a table or desk, as you will almost definitely get paint on the surface.

Putting multiple layers of scrap paper or newspaper is recommended (don't just use a single layer of paper towels as paint will seep through - I learned that the hard way!). Another option is to use a posterboard or foam board as a base to paint on.

Miscellaneous Terrain Pieces
Sticks, popsicle sticks, pebbles, rocks, leaf stems, bottle caps, seashells, potpourri - all these come in handy while decorating your terrain pieces. The list is not limited to these.

Once you've created a few pieces you will begin to see possibilities for the use of many common household materials in your terrain objects.
